101 Things to Do in England Before You Go Abroad

Visit England has published its list of 101 Things to Do in England, made up of ideas and suggestions from you, the great British public.

We love the list, which covers a diverse mixture of activities, attraction and events, in categories such as Food and Drink, Wildlife and Nature, Heritage, Culture and general Awesomeness!

To see the full list of 101 ideas head to the Visit England Facebook Page.

To whet your appetite, we’ve included some of our favourites below.

Bempton Cliff’s bird colonies, Yorkshire
From April to August over 200,000 gannets, puffins, guillemots and kittiwakes nest together on the towering chalk Bempton Cliffs – one of the finest places in England to catch bird migration in action. If you’re no expert, there are specially trained staff on hand to help.

Holkham Beach, Norfolk
Holkham Beach features white-golden sand that stretches for miles, but what makes this coastal setting special is the sand dunes, pine forests, marshes and a maze of creeks that create a home for a rich selection of flora, fauna and wildlife. There are breeding birds, pink-footed, natterjack toads, orchids, and a purple haze of sea lavender in the summer.

Fish ‘n’ chips in Aldeburgh, Suffolk
The family-run Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop has been picked out as one of the best producers of England’s signature dish. Their secret (not so secret now) is to fry their fish and chips in in beef dripping. It must work, queues often stretch right around the block.

Search for Monkey Orchids, Kent
Park Gate Down is an ancient chalk grassland that attracts feeding and breeding birds, adders and common lizards. It is also home to monkey orchids, one of the rarest types of orchid in Britain, and so named because they look like a monkey’s face dangling down from the stalks!

Sail like an Olympian, Dorset
The world-class sailing waters of Weymouth were brought to the world’s attention during the thrilling sailing events of the Olympics and today everyone, from absolute beginners to experts, can take to the waters and find tuition and ideal practice conditions.

Tour Brixham Fish Market, Devon
At Brixham’s fish market local fishermen haul in huge seabass, stacks of scallops and trays of plaice which are eventually sold to top restaurants across Europe. If you head down early you can tour the market with an expert and experience the hustle and bustle of the trade.

Surfing in Newquay, Cornwall
Newquay is the UK’s surf capital, so if you’ve ever dreamed of learning to ride the waves, this is the place to head to. If you need lessons the area is awash with surf schools who cater for all abilities.

From the end of August until November, Blackpool lights up the skies with more than a million bulbs, lasers and animatronics that flash, sparkle and twinkle along six miles of the iconic Promenade.
